With the imminent release of Chandler Server 1.0 and a confluence of other events, I've decided to transition to unpaid volunteer status (that is, leave my position at OSAF). Happily I already have a new gig lined up, thanks to good friend and old colleague Brian Moseley. I'll be joining him at WeatherBill, a San Francisco startup in the weather derivatives business. I didn't know much about that particular business before a month or so ago, which is not particularly surprising since it's a pretty quiet space at the moment.
While I can't say I expected to find myself working in anything even close to financials, I'm pretty excited about this for a numbers of reasons, many of which are the literally bajillions of data points involved in trying to figure out what the weather is going to do. There's also something very appealing about the core purpose of WeatherBill, that is, providing ways for small businesses to guard against weather related losses.
I start August 11th, but will, at the very least, continue to pay attention to Chandler mailing lists and provide whatever support I can in the more limited time I expect to have available.
